Background

In a tiny classroom in 2012, student designers at UCSD noticed that the design community on campus was rather small, and it was hard for entry-level designers to put their foot in industry. Fast forward to 2022, and now Design Co is the largest design organizations on campus with a growing community of over 300 students! Our mission stays the same -  to provide our student designers with opportunities to kickstart their design career and bloom together while we're at it 🌼

How do we do carry out our mission statement?

By hosting weekly workshops, panels, and initiatives that give our community of over 300 students the skills they need to blossom. More specifically, as an Industry Relations Coordinator, I am responsible for reaching out to companies for partnerships with Design Co as well as contacting industry mentors/speakers to attend our events and share their insights. By securing and nurturing our company collaborations, I help strengthen Design Co’s mission in breaking down the daunting walls of industry and bridge students with design professionals.

We've asked designers and recruiters from top companies to speak at our sessions, taught new designers how to play around in Figma, and even spearheaded our own design-centered career fair Stride! Here are some events that I’ve helped plan and lead:

Takeaways

Design is collaborative. 🤸🏼

Beyond my responsibilities as a board member, I love being part of Design Co because of the supportive and welcoming community. Starting off as a budding designer my first two years of college, Design Co’s events gave me the stepping stones to dive deeper into UX design, and I am super excited to now also contribute to UCSD’s design community ☺
